What it reads

Any PGN: one game or a file of hundreds, from lichess, Chess.com, a chess program or a scoresheet typed by hand (0-0 for castling and 12.Nf3 with no space are fine). The tags at the top give the players, result, date and time control. Comments in curly braces show under the move they follow, and a [%clk 0:15:08] inside a comment sets that player's clock, so the times beside the board are what each player had left after the move you are on. Engine evaluations ([%eval]) show too. Side lines in brackets are skipped, and the viewer plays the main line.

The moves are checked with chess.js, so an illegal or mistyped move stops the game at the move before it and says which one. A game that starts from a set-up position (a FEN tag) starts there.

The left and right arrow keys step through the moves; with the focus on the viewer, Home and End jump to the start and the end and F flips the board. Nothing you paste leaves this page.

The pieces are Colin M. L. Burnett's set, the same ones Chess Clock & Scorepad uses, under the BSD license. The move rules are chess.js by Jeff Hlywa, also BSD.

Make PGN like this at the board

The example above is exactly what Chess Clock & Scorepad, our free app, exports: make each move on its board and the clock presses itself, and the game is saved with every player's clock time. Share it as PGN, or export all your games in one file, and paste it here.

Frequently asked questions

What is PGN in chess?

Portable Game Notation, the plain-text format every chess site and program uses to save a game. It starts with tags in square brackets, like [White "Paul Morphy"], and then the moves in algebraic notation: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3. Comments go in curly braces.

How do you read a PGN file?

Open it in a text editor and paste the text into the box above, or paste a game you copied from a chess site or app. A file with several games shows a list to pick from. Then step through the moves with the arrows, or with the left and right arrow keys.

How do I convert PGN to FEN?

Paste the PGN above and go to the move you want: the FEN of that position is under the board, with a button to copy it. The viewer opens on the last move, so the FEN shown first is the final position.

What is FEN in chess?

Forsyth-Edwards Notation, one line of text that describes a single position: where every piece stands, whose move it is, castling rights, the en passant square and the move counters. PGN is the whole game; FEN is one moment of it.

What does %clk mean in a PGN?

It's a player's clock time after a move, written in a comment as {[%clk 0:15:08]}, hours, minutes and seconds. lichess, Chess.com and Chess Clock & Scorepad all write it, and the viewer shows both players' clocks for the move you are on.

Is my game uploaded anywhere?

No. The game is read and drawn by this page in your browser, and nothing you paste is sent to us or anyone else. It keeps working with the network off once the page has loaded.
