Where we stand, before the list. We make a Morse and cipher app, Covert Mail, so this is our own category and we are not neutral in it. It is free with one banner ad, on the App Store since 19 October 2026 for iPhone and iPad, and not yet on Google Play. It is on the list below, second from last, and it is not the verdict. We take no referral fee from any app named here.

Morse Mania is the Morse app most people have already tried. On 20 October 2026 it led Apple's search for “learn morse code” with 8,320 ratings at 4.9 stars, and Google Play showed 37.1K reviews and 1M+ downloads. It has 270 levels, no ads, and paid bundles from $4.99. Its iPhone app was last updated on 1 September 2025 and its Android app on 31 August 2025. The alternatives below are for people who want a Koch course, a one-time price, a free web course, or an app that is still being changed.

What each one costs, read off the listings

Read on 20 October 2026. Apple's column is the In-App Purchases row in each listing's Information section. Google Play did not show per-item prices in a form we could read, so the Play column is the badges and the download count.

The alternatives

LCWO.net, the free course

Learn CW Online runs a Koch method course in the browser, made by Fabian Kurz, DJ5CW. It needs a free account for the course, and its text-to-CW converter works without one. It has speed practice, MP3 practice files, a forum and user groups. Its front page showed 47 people online when we read it, and its latest news post, from 15 March 2026, says it moved to a new server. There is nothing to install and nothing to buy, which no app on this page can say.

Morse Code Complete, the closest to Morse Mania

A structured course of 200+ lessons, reviews and challenges in six sections, from letters to callsigns, Q-codes and a QSO generator, with receive and send training and Farnsworth spacing up to 60 words per minute. The listing says “No ads.” Every alphabet receive lesson is free; Apple lists Foundations Access at $4.99 and Full Access at $9.99, bought once. It had 88 App Store ratings at 4.8 and 2.04K Google Play reviews at 4.8, and both apps were updated in the last six weeks.

IZ2UUF Morse Koch CW, for Android

A receive trainer built for radio operators. It runs Koch lessons with G4FON, LCWO or custom character orders, Farnsworth spacing, a hard-letters setting that repeats what you miss, and a voice that reads each word after it is sent so you can practice with the screen off. It has 100K+ downloads and 988 reviews at 4.2 on Google Play, and an in-app purchases badge. Which parts are paid was not checked. We did not find an iPhone version.

Morse-It, the long-running iPhone toolkit

Sold on the App Store for $0.99, with 1,148 ratings at 4.7. It translates, decodes from the microphone, takes straight key and paddle input, and has a Koch trainer, a sending trainer, flash cards and the CWops Academy method, sold together as Learning features for $8.99. The Social Club is a subscription at $3.99 or $39.99. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs. A Google Play search for it on 20 October 2026 found nothing by that name.

Covert Mail, ours

Free with one banner, at the foot of the desk and never during a mission, and every ad request is marked as directed at children, so none is personalized. It teaches Morse by ear with the Koch method, starting with K and M at full speed, with Farnsworth spacing and practice planned around the characters you miss. You can send on an on-screen brass key and see your timing. It also teaches fourteen other codes, from the Caesar shift to Vigenère, which is the part none of the others here do. It is on iPhone and iPad only, in English and German, and has no callsigns, Q-codes or QSO practice. The browser trainer teaches the same Morse lessons with nothing to install.

Gboard's Morse input, for typing rather than listening

Google's keyboard can type in Morse on Android and iPhone once you add Morse code (US) as a language, and it works with TalkBack, Switch Access and external switches. Google built it as an accessibility tool. Its companion, the Morse Typing Trainer from Google Creative Lab and Tania Finlayson, is a free web app from 2018 that teaches the letters for typing them. Neither trains your ear, so it suits someone who wants to write in Morse and not someone heading for a radio license.

What these do better than ours

Morse Mania is the bigger Morse course: 135 receiving levels, 135 sending levels, 52 challenges, seven key types and prosigns through full sentences, with no ads at all. Morse Code Complete and IZ2UUF go further into radio work than ours, with callsigns, Q-codes and generated contacts. Morse-It reads Morse from the microphone and runs on a Mac. LCWO is free, has no ads, and runs on any computer. Morse Mania and Morse Code Complete say they show no ads, and ours has a banner. Morse Mania, Morse Code Complete, IZ2UUF and Gboard are on Android today, and ours is not. If you are studying for a radio license, start with LCWO and keep Morse Code Complete on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Morse Mania free?

The download is free and the listings say “Absolutely no ads.” Apple's In-App Purchases row lists a Beginner's Bundle at $4.99, a Pro Bundle at $8.99 and a monthly premium subscription at $0.99. Neither store listing says which of the 270 levels are free. Read 20 October 2026.

Is Morse Mania still being updated?

Not recently. On 20 October 2026 the iPhone app's latest version was 9.5.0, dated 1 September 2025, and Google Play showed Updated on 31 August 2025. It still works offline and still has 4.9 stars from 8,320 App Store ratings and 4.8 from 37.1K Google Play reviews.

Does Morse Mania use the Koch method?

Its listings do not say so. Both describe starting with the easiest letters, E and T, and moving to harder ones, with speed from 5 to 45 words per minute and Farnsworth spacing. The Koch method starts with two characters at full speed, usually K and M. LCWO.net, IZ2UUF Morse Koch CW and Morse-It's Koch trainer name it.

What is the best free app like Morse Mania?

For learning by ear at no cost, LCWO.net. It runs a Koch method course in any browser with a free account and no ads in what we read. On a phone, Morse Code Complete gives away every alphabet receive lesson with no ads and sells the rest of its course once, for $9.99 on the App Store.

Is there a Morse code app with no subscription?

Yes. Morse Code Complete sells Full Access once, $9.99 on Apple's list. Morse-It costs $0.99 to download and sells its learning features for $8.99 once, though its Social Club is a subscription. Morse Mania itself sells bundles once, beside its $0.99 monthly plan. Ours, Covert Mail, has nothing to buy and shows one banner ad.

Can I learn Morse code with Gboard?

Gboard can type in Morse, on Android and on iPhone, once you add Morse code (US) as a language. It is a keyboard, so it teaches nothing by ear. Google's Morse Typing Trainer, a free web app from 2018, teaches the letters for typing on that keyboard.

We make one of these, and that is the disclosure

Covert Mail: Morse & Ciphers is ours. It is free with one banner ad, on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and the Android version is not on Google Play yet. You can learn Morse by ear in your browser with the Koch method before installing anything. Everything the app does, and what it collects, is on its own page.
