What is on the sheet

All 26 letters, the ten numbers, and the period, comma, question mark, slash and the = break sign, each drawn in dots and dashes large enough to read across a room. The top of the page gives the timing: a dash is three dots long, with one dot of silence inside a letter, three between letters and seven between words. At the foot is SOS, sent as one unbroken signal.

The codes are International Morse Code, the same table as the Morse code translator, which plays any message as sound or light.

A chart is a start, not the way to learn

A chart is right for writing Morse down and for reading it slowly off paper. For hearing it, counting dots and dashes off a chart builds a habit you then have to unlearn: at any useful speed a letter is over before you can count it. The way that works is to learn each letter as a sound, a couple at a time. The free Morse code trainer does that with the Koch method, in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is SOS in Morse code?

Three dots, three dashes, three dots (...---...), sent as one signal with no gaps between the letters.

How long is a dash in Morse code?

Three times as long as a dot. The silence inside a letter is one dot long, between letters three, and between words seven.

What is the easiest way to learn Morse code?

By sound, a couple of letters at a time, rather than from a chart. The Koch method, used by most trainers, starts with two letters at full speed and adds one each time you copy 90% of them. Our free Morse code trainer does it in a browser.

Which Morse code is this?

International Morse Code, the version used everywhere today. The older American Morse code of the telegraph era differs in many letters.
