Where we stand, before anything else. We make Taco Rain, a free catching game on the App Store and Google Play. It carries ads and has no in-app purchases, and this page counts another game's. We take no referral fee from SYBO or Apple, and there is no affiliate link on this page. Subway Surfers has more than a billion downloads on Google Play alone, so ours does not compete with it in any meaningful sense.
Yes. Subway Surfers is free to download and free to play, and SYBO's help center says “you don't have to make any purchases to play.” The game pays for itself with ads and an in-game store. SYBO also sells a version with neither, Subway Surfers+, but only through Apple Arcade.
Three listings, three prices
| Subway Surfers | Subway Surfers+ | Subway Surfers City | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Apple Arcade: $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year | Free |
| Stores | App Store, Google Play | App Store only; not among SYBO's Play listings | App Store; Play not read |
| Ads | Yes (Play: Contains ads) | “No ads” | Not stated by Apple |
| In-app purchases | Ten listed, $0.99 or $4.99 | “No in-app purchases” | Ten listed, $1.99 to $9.99 |
| Apple: Data Used to Track You | Purchases, Location, User Content, Identifiers, Usage Data, Diagnostics | None: “Data Not Collected” | Location, Identifiers, Usage Data |
| Age rating | 9+ | 9+ | 9+ |
Subway Surfers+ calls itself “the premium Apple Arcade edition” of the same game, with “new ways to revive, collect and progress”. The edition you pay for declares no data collected. The free one declares six categories used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. The Arcade fee buys over 200 games, so it is not a Subway Surfers price. Subway Surfers City is a separate, newer game with a Season Pass ($4.99) among its ten items. All three panels are SYBO's own declarations, and Apple notes it has not verified them.
Apple's ten prices
| Item, as Apple names it | Price |
|---|---|
| 7,500 Coins | $0.99 |
| 25 Keys | $4.99 |
| Coin Pack 1 | $0.99 |
| 45,000 Coins | $4.99 |
| Double Coins | $4.99 |
| 12 500 Coins | $0.99 |
| 65 000 Coins | $4.99 |
| Starter Pack | $0.99 |
| 40 Keys | $4.99 |
| Key Pack 1 | $4.99 |
Two prices cover all ten items. 25 Keys and 40 Keys are both $4.99, and so are 45,000 and 65,000 Coins; nothing on the listing says which offer a given player sees. Double Coins is the one item SYBO prices itself: its help center sells Unlimited Double Coins, a one-time purchase, for “$4.99 USD or your countries currency equivalent.” Apple caps this list at ten and does not claim it is complete. Google Play shows no price at all: no items-and-offers section under either heading and no per-item range, read once on 12 October 2026.
What the store does not price
None of Apple's ten items removes ads. The help center's article on Skip Ad Tickets says each ticket skips one reward ad, and that “since this is a real-money purchase, you're also getting the additional permanent benefit of no pop-up ads”. The ticket's price appears on neither listing and not in the article. So the cost of a game without pop-ups is published only for the Arcade edition.
Google Play's rating line reads “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)”; Apple's listing does not use the phrase. The help center says Mystery Boxes are bought with Coins or by watching ads, and Coins are sold for money. None of the help center's articles we read publishes odds for what a box contains.
A revive, “Save Me”, costs Keys, and the help center says “the cost doubles every time you use it”: 1, then 2, then 4. Derived, and labeled as derived: five revives in one run cost 31 Keys, more than the 25 Keys sold for $4.99. Keys can also be earned in play, from achievements, the Daily Video and Season Hunt tiers.
Refunds, and a child's purchase
| Bought on | What SYBO says to do |
|---|---|
| App Store | SYBO “cannot issue any refund”; ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com |
| Google Play | Send the GPA order codes through the in-game chat, and SYBO will “look into it further” |
| Amazon | Ask Amazon |
SYBO's terms, section 5.7, say that outside the European Union “all purchases are final”, subject to the store's own terms and applicable law. Coins and Keys already spent cannot be reversed. Section 5.5 says virtual goods and currency do not expire, though SYBO keeps the right to change that.
Three ages for one game
Apple rates Subway Surfers 9+. Google Play rates it Everyone 10+, for fantasy violence. SYBO's terms say anyone accepting them represents being 13 or older, and in section 2.3 that “regardless of your age, you can access and use our Services”. The practical effect is in the help center: online save, which keeps progress across devices, works only for players who gave an age of 13 or older at install, “mandatory by COPPA”. The age cannot be changed later except by reinstalling, which deletes progress saved on the device.
What Subway Surfers does better
- The free game is the whole game. Coins turn up throughout a run and Keys now and then, and SYBO's own help center says buying is optional.
- A paid way out exists. Subway Surfers+ removes the ads, the shop and, by SYBO's declaration, the data collection. Taco Rain has no ad-free edition at all.
- It keeps changing. SYBO's copyright line runs from 2012, and the October 2026 update moves the game to Transylvania with Halloween and Día de los Muertos events that end on 1 November.
- Editors' Choice on both stores, more than 3.9 million ratings on Apple, and fourteen languages.
- It plays offline, which Google Play lists among its tags.
Halfbrick sells Fruit Ninja the same two ways, free and on Apple Arcade; see games like Fruit Ninja.
What we could not check
Nothing inside the game was read, so the price of a Skip Ad Ticket, what a Mystery Box can hold and the store a US player actually sees are all missing. Subway Surfers+ was not played. Google Play's items-and-offers section was read once, on 12 October 2026, and Subway Surfers City's Play listing was not read.
