Where we stand, before anything else. We build four small reward apps for the iPhone. Swagbucks competes with them for the same spare ten minutes, though it is a much bigger and broader product than anything we make. No referral fee reaches us from Swagbucks or anybody else, and there is no affiliate link on this page — which is unusual for a page about Swagbucks, because its referral programme is the reason most of them exist. Check the sources at the foot, which are Swagbucks' own.
Swagbucks is legitimate, it has been running since 2008, and it sends real money to real PayPal accounts. It is one of the very few apps in this category where the answer to “does it actually pay cash” is simply yes. The interesting questions are the ones underneath that.
The short answer
It pays. The rate is low, it is honest about the mechanics, and the only genuinely sharp edges are a twelve-month dormancy rule and the fact that an SB is not worth exactly a cent no matter what the shorthand says. If you arrive expecting a side income you will be disappointed; if you arrive expecting a slow trickle from time that was already dead, it delivers that reliably.
What an SB is actually worth
The rule of thumb everyone quotes is 100 SB to the dollar. It is close enough to plan with, and it is not a fixed exchange rate — the price of each reward is set individually, so the value of an SB depends entirely on what you convert it into.
The clearest example is on Swagbucks' own store. The $25 PayPal reward is priced at 2,530 SB. At the headline rate that is $25.30, so you are paying a 30 SB premium; the listing says the extra covers PayPal's processing fee. It is a small, disclosed, entirely defensible charge. It is also the proof that 100 SB = $1 is a convention rather than a promise, which is worth internalising before you plan around a balance.
The same logic runs the other way. Gift cards are sometimes offered below the headline rate, which means cash is deliberately the worst-value exit from the system and a retailer you were going to spend at anyway is the best. That is a rational thing for Swagbucks to do and a genuinely useful thing for you to know: if you buy groceries at a chain in the catalogue, take the card, not the cash.
The cash-out terms, which are better than the category norm
- Redemptions start at about 300 SB, roughly $3. Among the large reward platforms that is a low bar, and a low bar is a consumer protection: it decides whether a balance you lose interest in is recoverable or stranded.
- PayPal payments take 3–10 business days by Swagbucks' own statement. Slower than the same-day promises elsewhere in the category, and stated up front rather than discovered.
- The names have to match. Your PayPal email, first name and last name must match your Swagbucks account, and the PayPal account must be verified. This is the single most common reason a payout fails.
- You have 30 days to claim the payment once PayPal emails you, after which it expires. Worth knowing if you redeem to an address you do not check.
The twelve-month rule
An account that has not been logged into for twelve consecutive months is deemed inactive and deactivated, and SB sitting in it are void unless the account is reactivated in time. Swagbucks does allow re-crediting for accounts reactivated promptly, which is more generous than the bare rule suggests.
We would rather this did not exist, but it is worth being fair about scale. Twelve months of never opening the app is a long time, the fix is a single login, and Swagbucks is far from the strictest in the category on this point — Fetch expires balances after 90 days of inactivity. Read it as a reason to redeem at $3 instead of saving toward $25.
The thing no reward platform publishes
Swagbucks pays for surveys, and surveys are paid per completion. The part that decides your real hourly rate is how often you spend four minutes on screening questions and are then told you do not qualify. That time is not paid, it is not predictable, and — here is the point — no survey platform publishes its disqualification rate. Not Swagbucks, not any of its competitors.
So any confident hourly figure for survey earnings, ours included, would be invented. What can be said honestly is structural: survey income is the least predictable thing on the platform, and the routes that do not involve being screened out — cashback on purchases you were making anyway, search, the occasional offer — are where the reliable value sits. If you use Swagbucks for one thing, make it the shopping side.
What Swagbucks does better than we do
This section is on every review we write. Here it is not a close contest.
- The ceiling is far higher. Someone who runs their online shopping through the cashback portal can earn amounts our apps cannot approach. Ours pay pocket money and we say so on the page about what ours pay.
- There are many ways in. Surveys, cashback, offers, search, games. If one route dries up the others remain, which is structurally more robust than a single mechanic.
- Eighteen years and a real company behind it. Longevity is a safety feature in a category where apps close without warning and take balances with them.
- It is everywhere. iPhone, Android, a desktop site and a browser extension. Ours is iPhone and iPad only.
- Cashback is the honest best deal in this whole category. Money back on a purchase you had already decided to make is not a wage for your attention — it is a discount. That is a better trade than anything an ad-funded app can offer you, ours included.
Side by side with our apps
Mechanics only. These are not really the same kind of product — Swagbucks is a broad rewards platform and ours are four single-purpose apps — but the payout terms are directly comparable, and those are what people actually want to know.
| Swagbucks | Our four apps | |
|---|---|---|
| What you earn | SB | Coins |
| Headline rate | About 100 SB to the dollar, varying by reward | 1,000 coins to the dollar, fixed |
| Paid out as | PayPal cash or gift cards | PayPal cash |
| Threshold | From about 300 SB, roughly $3 | 2,000 coins, which is $2.00 |
| Payout speed | 3–10 business days to PayPal | Reviewed by hand, then sent |
| Dormancy | Deactivated after 12 months without a login | No inactivity rule |
| Ways to earn | Surveys, cashback, offers, search, games | One mechanic per app |
| Platforms | iPhone, Android, web | iPhone and iPad only |
The column that suits you depends on what you are bringing. Swagbucks rewards deliberate effort across several routes and pays more for it. Ours reward a few minutes and pay two dollars at a time. Neither is a wage.
Who should install it
Install Swagbucks if you shop online with any regularity — start with the cashback portal and treat everything else as optional. It is also a reasonable fit if you genuinely do not mind surveys, though go in knowing that the disqualifications are the price of admission and nobody will tell you the rate in advance.
Skip it if you want something that pays in five-minute chunks with a predictable rate, and do not build up a large balance on principle: redeem at the low threshold, take the gift card if you would have spent at that retailer anyway, and log in once a year even if you have stopped using it.
What we checked, and when
Every figure on this page came from one of the sources below on 16 August 2026, and the App Store numbers were read from Apple's own listing data the same day. Reward prices in particular are set per item and change, so treat the 2,530 SB figure as an example of how the pricing works rather than a permanent number — and tell us if something has moved.
