Where we stand, before the list. We publish four small reward apps that pay coins for steps, games, quizzes and finished tasks. None of them pays cash back on shopping, so none of them replaces Rakuten and none appears in the list below. We still compete for the same idea of getting paid for everyday things, and that is our conflict. There is no referral or affiliate link on this page. Rakuten pays $50 for a referral, and fees like that pay for most pages like this one.
Rakuten is legitimate, and our Rakuten review explains why. People leave it mostly because of the calendar. It pays only on 15 February, 15 May, 15 August and 15 November, and only Cash Back that the store has confirmed by then. The other reasons come up less often: a $5.00 monthly fee on balances left idle for a year, and rates that change daily, which our look at what Rakuten pays works through. So the useful way to sort the alternatives is by when each one lets you take the money, what it pays in, and what it charges if you stop.
What Rakuten pays, and when
Rakuten's help center, read on 20 October 2026, says you need minimum confirmed earnings of $5.01 before a payment date, and a smaller balance carries over. Payments go by check, PayPal, American Express Membership Rewards points or Bilt. Online and in-store Cash Back typically takes 3 to 14 weeks to confirm, and travel 45 to 120 days. There is one quick route: a confirmed balance of at least $5.00 can be redeemed for a gift card that arrives within minutes. Section 11.2 of its terms allows a fee of $5.00 a month once an account has gone twelve months without shopping or starting a shopping trip. Its referral page pays $50 when a friend spends $50 within 90 days. The App Store listing holds 361,945 ratings, and Google Play shows 10M+ downloads.
All of them side by side
Mechanics only, because mechanics are the part you can check. Every figure is the company's own, read on 20 October 2026 and linked at the foot of the page.
| Service | When you can cash out | Minimum | Paid in | Idle balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rakuten | Four dates a year, or a gift card in minutes | $5.01, or $5.00 for a gift card | Check, PayPal, Amex points, Bilt, gift cards | $5.00 a month after 12 inactive months |
| TopCashback | Any time once Cash Back is available | None stated | Bank, PayPal, Venmo, gift cards | No fee. May close accounts not logged in for 6 months |
| BeFrugal | Most payouts sent the next business day | $0.01 electronic, $25 by check | Bank, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, check, eGift cards | Not mentioned on its help pages |
| Capital One Shopping | When rewards post, 30 to 90 days after purchase | $5.00 | E-gift cards only, never cash | Rewards do not expire |
| Ibotta | After $20, one redeemed offer and a 7-day wait | $20 | Bank, PayPal, gift cards | $3.99 every 30 days after 180 inactive days |
| PayPal Honey | After points clear a pending period of up to 90 days | 1,000 points for a gift card | PayPal Rewards points | PayPal says points may expire |
None of these can pay you before the store confirms the purchase, so a faster cash-out shortens only the wait after confirmation. Cash back rates are set store by store and change often on every one of them, which is why this table leaves rates out.
If you want the same thing, paid sooner
TopCashback
TopCashback is the closest match to Rakuten in shape: a cash back portal with an app, a website and a browser extension. Its home page says it works with over 7,000 retailers, that it is completely free with no sign-up or membership fees, and that it passes 100% of its commission back to you. Its help pages say Cash Back becomes available only after the retailer has been invoiced through its affiliate network, on a timetable that varies by store. After that you can withdraw to a bank, Venmo or PayPal, or take a gift card, at any time. Its terms set no minimum beyond having payable funds. The same terms ask you to log in at least once every six months and reserve the right to close dormant accounts, and a closed account forfeits its Cash Back. The App Store listing has 16,618 ratings, and Google Play shows 100K+ downloads.
BeFrugal
BeFrugal's help page sets the lowest bar we found: $0.01 for direct deposit, PayPal, Venmo and Zelle, and $25 for a paper check, which is US only. It says most payouts are sent the next business day after you request one. Its FAQ says it partners with over 5,000 retailers, and it offers a price match: if you find a higher cash back rate elsewhere and contact it within 24 hours of the purchase with the receipt, it pays 125% of that rate. The two waiting figures on its own pages disagree. A banner says Cash Back is typically payable 15 to 60 days after purchase, and the FAQ says it stays verified for 30 to 90 days. The App Store listing has 7,737 ratings, and Google Play shows 500K+ downloads.
If you mostly shop through a browser
Capital One Shopping
Capital One Shopping says it earns a commission on eligible purchases and may share it with you as Shopping Rewards. Its terms of service, section 6, say rewards are redeemed for e-gift cards and may never be redeemed for cash, and that the minimum balance is $5.00. Rewards typically post 30 to 90 days after a purchase, and unused rewards on a valid account do not expire. You do not need a Capital One card. The terms allow sign-up with a username and password. If you leave Rakuten because you want PayPal or a bank transfer, this one does not give you that. It has 1,703,483 ratings on the App Store and 5M+ downloads on Google Play.
PayPal Honey
Honey is a coupon extension first. Purchases made through it earn PayPal Rewards points rather than dollars. PayPal's help page says points can be used at PayPal checkout at 100 points to $1 or donated to charity, that they stay pending for up to 90 days, and that they are not money and may expire. Honey's help center says US members need 1,000 points for a gift card and a linked US PayPal account to redeem within PayPal. The App Store listing has 10,306 ratings, and Google Play shows 5M+ downloads.
If you also buy groceries
Ibotta
Ibotta is best known for grocery rebates, and it also pays cash back on online shopping. Its help center says you tap Online Shopping in the app and buy through its link, or use its browser extension, which works only in Google Chrome, and the cash back lands in the same balance as your grocery earnings. To withdraw you need at least $20, at least one redeemed offer, and a wait of 7 days after your first redemption, then it goes to a bank, PayPal or a gift card. Its maintenance fee article says an account with no activity for 180 days loses $3.99 of its balance every 30 days. Ibotta's help center also warns that other discount apps running in the background can break the link to the retailer. It has 1,973,855 ratings on the App Store and 10M+ downloads on Google Play.
What these do better than ours
- They pay for spending you were going to do anyway. Every service on this page shares a retailer's commission with you. Ours pay a share of advertising, at 1,000 coins to the dollar, for a few minutes of your attention, and that is a smaller pot.
- The amounts are larger. Rakuten's minimum payment is $5.01 of cash back. Our apps start at 2,000 coins, which is $2.00, and getting there takes days of use rather than one purchase.
- Your balance lives in an account. All six keep your money on their servers, so it follows you to a new phone. Ours keep coins on the device, so an iPhone balance and an Android balance are separate.
- Some pay out in ways we do not. Rakuten pays in Amex points and Bilt, BeFrugal in Zelle and Venmo, and TopCashback in Venmo. Ours pay PayPal only.
How to check any of these yourself
Every figure on this page came from a help center, a terms page or a store listing. Look for three things before you sign up anywhere: the minimum to cash out, the dates or delay before you can take the money, and the fee or closure rule for an idle account. That last one is usually in the terms rather than the help center, as it is for Rakuten and TopCashback.
Then cash out when you can. A balance in any of these is money a company owes you, not money you hold, which is the lesson from the last big app in this category to close without notice.
