A printable weekly music practice log with an assignments grid ticked by day, daily minutes against a goal, a what-I-fixed line for each day, and boxes for a parent signature and teacher initials
One page, US Letter. Download the PDF. It's free, with no sign-up.

What is on the sheet

At the top go the student's name, the instrument, the week and the daily goal in minutes. Under that is a grid for the week's assignments: seven rows for pieces, scales or sections, a column for what to work on in each, and a box for every day of the week to tick when it got practiced.

Then a row of minutes, Monday to Sunday with a total, and a small note under each day to circle when the goal was met. Below that, one line a day headed “What I fixed”. The foot has room for questions for the teacher, a parent's signature and a box for the teacher's initials.

How to use it

Fill in the assignments at the lesson, while the teacher is still in the room, in the teacher's words. At home, tick the piece you worked on and write down the minutes when you stop. Then write one line on what changed. “Bar 12 rhythm finally even” is plenty, and it's the line a teacher reads first.

Bring the sheet to the next lesson. A row with no ticks shows what got skipped without anyone having to ask. Start a fresh sheet the day after the lesson.

The PDF is one page at US Letter size. Print it at 100%, or with Fit to page on A4. Teachers are welcome to copy it for every student.

Frequently asked questions

What should a music practice log include?

The minutes for each day, what you worked on, and a short note on what changed. This sheet adds a daily goal at the top and boxes to tick for each piece or scale, so you can see at a glance which ones got skipped.

How many minutes a day should a student practice?

Whatever the teacher asks. Write that number in the daily goal box, and circle the note under each day you reach it.

Why write down what I fixed?

Minutes alone don't show progress. A line like “bar 12 rhythm clean now” tells the teacher where to pick up, and tells you the practice did something.

Can a teacher hand this out to a whole studio?

Yes. It's free to print and copy, with no sign-up. There's a box for the teacher's initials at the bottom for checking it at the lesson.

Will it print on A4 paper?

It's made for US Letter. On A4, choose Fit to page in the print dialog and it shrinks slightly, which is fine for a sheet you write on.

Practice Proof on your phone

Practice Proof keeps the same week on a phone. Put it near the instrument and it counts only the minutes it hears playing or singing, then makes a practice sheet for the teacher as a PDF or a spreadsheet, with a line for a parent's signature. The sound is checked on the phone and thrown away. It's free on the App Store.
