How to cancel Rocket Money

Two routes, and picking the wrong one is why people think Rocket Money is hard to cancel. Everything below is published by Rocket Money, Apple or Google, and was read on 21 September 2026 in the US, signed out. The difficulty is not that anything is hidden — it is that the half you need is filed under a heading you would never search for.

First, work out who bills you

This is the entire decision and it takes ten seconds. If you signed up on an iPhone through the App Store, Apple bills you. If you signed up on Android through the Play Store, Google bills you. If you signed up on the website, or in the app with a linked bank account, Rocket Money bills you directly.

One check settles it: Rocket Money’s direct billing runs on a linked checking account, and its own help center says it cannot accept credit cards or prepaid cards. So if the charge appears on a card statement rather than as a bank debit, you are an App Store or Play subscriber and the in-app steps will not work for you.

If Rocket Money bills you directly

The cancellation control is not a button. It is the bottom end of the price slider, which is unusual enough to be worth stating before the steps: Rocket Money lets you set what you pay for Premium, so leaving is expressed as setting your price to nothing.

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle and Premium keeps working until then.

If Apple or Google bills you

Rocket Money cannot cancel these and neither can the slider above, because the subscription is not Rocket Money’s to end — it is a store subscription, and only the store can stop it. Both companies publish their own instructions, which is worth knowing on its own: the authoritative page is never the app’s, and almost nobody writing about cancellations links to either.

• Apple. Settings → your name at the top → Subscriptions → pick the subscription → Cancel Subscription. The full version, including what to do when the subscription is not listed, is Apple’s own page, last published 14 September 2026.
• Google. Open the Play app → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → pick it → Cancel subscription. Google’s own page carries it, along with the warning below.

The finding: where those steps are published

Rocket Money does publish the Apple and Google steps. They are in an article titled “Accessing my free Premium Membership from my Rocket Mortgage”, under the sub-heading “I’ve already purchased a Premium Membership through Apple or Google, how do I cancel?” — because a mortgage client entitled to free Premium needs to stop paying for the copy they already bought.

The article actually called “Managing my Premium Membership” — the one titled for this job, the one the help center surfaces, the one a search engine returns — describes the slider and the website and never mentions Apple or Google at all.

So both halves are published and neither is hidden, and a reader who is billed by Apple will still read the wrong one, follow steps that cannot work, and conclude the app is trapping them. That is not a dark pattern. It is a filing problem, and it produces the same outcome as one, which is the only reason it is worth a page.

A smaller artifact in the same help center, noted while checking: the article ID that search results still label “How do I cancel or modify my Premium Membership” now serves an article about updating your payment method. The old address still resolves, so a search result promising cancellation instructions lands on billing instructions instead.

The two deadlines nobody puts on a cancel screen

Both are published, in documents other than the one you cancel from.

Three business days, from Rocket Money’s terms. The Terms of Service, effective 29 June 2026, say you must notify Rocket Money at least three business days before a scheduled debit to stop it. Cancel inside that window and the terms are explicit about what you are relying on: they “may nonetheless attempt, in our sole discretion” to cancel the debit, and “assume no responsibility for our failure to do so”.

Twenty-four hours, from Apple. If you are on a trial through the App Store, Apple’s own instruction is to cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.

Worth putting beside those: in roughly 49,800 characters, Rocket Money’s Terms of Service use the word Premium 49 times and the words renew, refund and free trial not once. That is not a trick — the renewal mechanics for store-billed subscribers genuinely live in Apple’s and Google’s agreements rather than this one. It does mean that the document you agreed to is not where you will find out what happens at the end of a month, and a reader looking for a refund clause will not find one to read.

What canceling does not do

Three things survive it, all three stated by Rocket Money:

• Your account stays open. Canceling Premium does not delete it.
• The emails keep coming unless you change your alert settings separately.
• Active Bill Negotiations remain in place — and those carry a success fee calculated on twelve months of savings, charged up front. This is the one with money attached, and it is the reason “I canceled” and “I owe nothing” are different sentences. The arithmetic is on apps like Rocket Money.

And the mistake that costs the most, from Google’s own help page rather than ours: “When you uninstall an app, your subscription won’t cancel.” Deleting the app removes the only thing that was going to remind you, and changes nothing about the billing.

What Rocket Money does better

Three things, and the first is the one this page exists to acknowledge.

It publishes complete cancellation instructions for both routes. Filed oddly, but written down, in its own words, for free, without an account. A great many subscription apps publish nothing of the sort, and the entire complaint above is about where two articles sit rather than about anything being withheld.

Pay-what-you-want is genuinely unusual and genuinely in your favor. Rocket Money’s terms say you may choose the price with “no change in service or functionality” — the cheap tier is not a worse product. Very little in this category works that way, and the fact that it makes the cancel control harder to find is a side effect of the good idea, not evidence against it.

It publishes its own limits. The help center carries an article called “Why can’t Rocket Money cancel this?”, which is a company documenting what its flagship feature fails at. That is rarer than it should be and it is worth saying so.

So how do you actually cancel it

Check a statement to see who charges you. If it is a bank debit, use the slider in Membership and drag it to $0, at least three business days before your next debit. If it is a card charge, cancel in the App Store or in Play, 24 hours ahead if you are on a trial. Then, separately, turn off the alerts and check whether a Bill Negotiation is still running, because neither of those ends when the subscription does.

Every instruction on this page came from Rocket Money, Apple or Google, and the one thing we added is the sentence at the top: find out who bills you first. That is the step the help center never says out loud, and it is the reason the wrong article is the one most people read.
